Rocky Mountain Power Part of Largest Utility Owner of Renewable Energy in US

Rocky Mountain Power is committed to bringing more renewable energy choices to Utah, and part of that is through our parent company, Berkshire Hathaway Energy.

Berkshire Hathaway Energy owns approximately 7% of wind generation capacity in the U.S. through its regulated utilities, MidAmerican Energy Company and PacifiCorp. That’s more than any other rate-regulated energy company in the country. In addition, Berkshire Hathaway Energy’s solar projects account for approximately 6% of the U.S. solar market and include two of the largest solar photovoltaic projects in the world, the Topaz and Solar Star projects.

Investing in renewable energy

Currently, approximately one-third of Berkshire Hathaway Energy’s owned and contracted energy generation capacity comes from renewable and non-carbon sources. Berkshire Hathaway Energy has invested more than $17 billion in renewable energy projects with plans for more.

Behind the scenes

Watch a single wind turbine at one of Berkshire Hathaway Energy’s projects be built from the ground up.

Berkshire Hathaway Energy was the first energy company to sign on to the American Business Act on Climate Pledge, joining a number of large U.S. businesses—including Apple, Google, Best Buy, Dell and General Motors.

As part of this commitment, Berkshire Hathaway Energy pledges to:

  • Invest up to an additional $15 billion in renewable energy generation
  • Add more than 1,000 megawatts of incremental solar and wind capacity to Rocky Mountain Power’s fleet, nearly doubling the existing capacity
  • Invest in transmission infrastructure in the West and Midwest to support the integration of renewable energy into the grid
  • Support and advance the development of markets in the West to optimize the electric grid, lower costs, enhance reliability and more effectively integrate renewable resources
